As custodians of the land that we have been blessed to steward. It is very important to us that we farm in a very mindful and ethical way. Our way of life has to be sustainable for many more generations yet to come. It is important that we build up the land, with excellent water & mineral cycles, high flow of energy and rich biologically diverse communities. In a time when climate change is at the forefront of many people’s minds, it’s imperative to live as sustainably as possible. Farming with nature at the heart of our actions, we can work in harmony and balance with our environment, providing nutrient dense forage for our grazing animals, which will in turn produce nutrient dense food for us.
Allowing animals to grow at a natural rate means that we do not have to rely on carbon heavy practices of feeding our animals heavily processed supplementary feed. Everything they need they get from the land and in turn they naturally fertilise the land they live on with their dung and urine.
As our animals are moved regularly, it is extremely unlikely that they will need to take worming medication. This action alone is fantastic news for all the wonderful insects we need to have in our soils. Worming medication is known to have a detrimental effect on many of the insects we rely on. Another benefit to being moved regularly is that we don’t have to use chemicals to control the flies that can cause so many problems for the livestock. Because we don’t use chemicals to kill the flies, means that the animals that feed on the dung, taking its nutrients in to the ground, are not adversely affected, so that their communities can thrive and these actually eat the fly eggs that are laid on the dung, nature takes care of its self and cleans up after its self, if allowed to do so.
Managing the farm with Planned Holistic Grazing reduces our plants from being over grazed. If the animals are moved regularly with still a decent amount of the green plant left, the demand on the plant to regrow is reduced. The energy it needs to regrow comes from the sun instead of using its stored energy in the roots. As the plant can recover quicker, the roots can grow stronger. This all improves the water and mineral cycles on the land and helps our land to retain more of the rainfall so that it is better able to withstand the effects of drought.
Looking after our animals with their well-being and the well-being of the land being our priorities means that our animals can live lives as stress free as possible. This alone improves the quality of their meat and the flavour it develops.
